A first car for my son - update

Hi,

My son is enjoying the 85 4ksq and learning to drive the clutch. He
starts Drivers Ed this weekend, if the weather holds. While we were
practicing in a parking lot, and he began to feel more comfortable, he
got a little bold and gave it some gas. He was surprised at how quick
the car is, and he got that little grin that we all get when we feel
that acceleration for the first time. He really likes the car.

We picked up an instruction sheet on "Strategies for Teaching the Clutch
and Use of a Standard Transmission for Teen Drivers" published by the
Driving Skills Institute in Colorado Springs. It has seemed to work very
well. He is doing much better than I did when I learned to drive a
stick, I guess that's what they mean by evolution :-).

Anyway, if anyone needs to teach someone how to drive a standard
transmission, this seems like a pretty good method, regardless of their
age. If anyone is interested I can try to get the pamphlet scanned and
send it as an attachment. They give permission to reproduce the document
in its entirety including credit to DSI. They only ask for a donation if
you find it helpful. (I have no affiliation with that group.)

Thanks again for all of your help and advice. So far it has worked out
very well, and I am grateful to the list members.
