Chains on front/rears

Gee whiz, I sure wasn't prepared for a huge snowstorm. Fortunatly, my Q
performed near flawlessly. However, even considering the amount of snow we
got, I'd like to get a set of chains for my baby.
The Audi manual says chains are OK on the fronts, but not to put them on
the rears. ? why not? I'd like to put them on all fours; it works
especially well for the trucks around here... ( I live off a dirt road in
the mountains.. )

Any comments or 'whatnot'?
