Fuels and octane ratings.

I had noticed the sticker on the filler cap of my 80 sport saying min 98 RON
for some time. Looking at the pump handles as Phil says it is indeed true that
4 star is 97, from time to time I put the super unleaded in (which as Phil says
indeed says 98 on the handle) and it ALWAYS makes my car run better. The TEXACO
clean system 3 4 star stuff also seems to make my car run better so it may not
be a fuel octane rating thing. The thing I want to know is what did people used 
to run cars requiring 98 octane on? I cannot quite remember if there was a sort 
of super 4 star available or not.
