I found last year in my A4 that the ABS _DID NOT_ work well in snow.
I had no trouble braking carefully, but when I tried just stomping
on the brakes and letting the ABS take over, it was scary. I simply
_DIDN'T_ stop. I think what happens is that the wheels go from turning
to lockup virtually immediately, the ABS releases the braking pressure
until the wheel is turning again and then lets the braking pressure
back to the caliper... Repeat... The time to lockup is so short that
in effect, you get almost no braking effect.
The ABS on the 86 5kCSQ was better - it cycled more slowly, in
spite of the D60/A2 tires which suck in the snow.
