Coupe GT digital dash help

First, my thanks to this list and the responses from various members
about how their digital dash behaves in bright sunlight. My brother and
I investigated the photo-resistor/diode that sits in the instrument cluster
vents on the left side, and found that it had a busted wire. All attempts
to solder it have failed (there is not enough of a lead from the optical
device).

So, does anyone have any idea of what we can use to replace that device
with? Its resistance changes as it receives more light...from a short
circuit at high light levels to an open circuit in the dark. I have
looked in my Digikey catalog and the only thing I can find are photodiodes
and phototransistors. Does someone know the functional behavior of a
photodiode?

Thanks,
Eric
