Two Questions: '88 5ktq

  I have two questions concerning an '88 5ktq:

  1.  Can you check to see if you have a faulty idle control switch by "pulling
the codes"?  Or, is this a guess, replace, and see if the problem goes away?

  2.  Were the '88 5ktq's identical to the '87's?  I read somewhere that the
'88's were slightly higher compression.  Is there any truth to this?  All 5ktq'
s I'd driven all seemed about the same, regardless of year.  But so many of
them are different when the get older, it is hard to tell.
