I second that. Reading the tests in 'R&T on Audi & Auto Union 1952-'80',
they weren't that bad. There were different bombs, steering racks, master
cylinders and doorhandles back then, but let's not pretend we're driving
perfect cars now... An owners survey in aforementioned book said that most
of the 100LS owners would buy another one. Does that sound familiar?

I spoke to a few 100LS owners at a Dutch Audi Club meeting in Amsterdam,
about a year and a half ago. Most seemed to agree that they were
over-engineered and sturdy cars. One had bought a US-spec '73 100LS from a
scrapyard, which was driveable when he got some wheels for it and put the
gas in. The only thing he needed to replace was the exhaust, and it'd been
reliable since then.

Even when they do not have AWD or a turbo, Audis are good cars. I'd buy
almost any '80s Audi for sale here without hesitation... in fact, I've
often considered selling my car and buying an older (pre-'85) FWD 80-
they're reliable, economical and it's a nice thing not to have too much
money tied up in your car.
