When I bought my car, w/close to 100k miles on it, it sounded like a
diesel. Sales guy: 'Yes, but it's been standing a while. It'll disappear
eventually'. Well, not in a 20 mile test drive it didn't. I made them
replace all lifters as a part of the sale, and it's been super-quiet ever
since.
Going to synth oil made the lifter noise at startup go from one minute to
10 secs.
