My father had an 86 or so VW Camper.  He left it sitting for several
months, and  when he finally started it again, the lifters were makeing
awfull noises.  He tried running for several minutes for several days in
a row.  Eventually someone told him to add a little ATF to the oil and
sure enough, the lifter noise went away.
