I have to jump in here. My father's first non-american car was a green
'73 100LS, which I came home from the hospital in when I was born. To
this day, he claims that is the cause of my fixation. (And no, he never
had any problems with the much-lamented inboard brakes or CV joints.)
The successes that he had with that car lead to the purchase of a '78
Fox GTI (w/ three speed auto; yuck!) for my mother to commute to/from
work in. They still own that car to this day, and it's been reliable as
can be. The only failure that could have potentially stranded the car
was the alternator bracket broke while I was driving the car.
As luck would have it, I had my toolbox in the car with an old alt.
bracket off of a '80 4k which served in a pinch when installed
backwards.
Feel free to flame me, but I happen to be a bit fond of the Audi that
were made in the '70s.
later!
