Radio reception problem

I have a 1991 Coupe Quattro with the stock Audi Gamma radio.  I get
virtually no AM reception, but FM is ok.  The Bentley manual talks about
the car having two antennas, one in the windshield and one in the rear
window, with the front for FM and the rear for both AM and FM.  I can't see
an antenna in the windshield, but have an antenna on the hatch.  Is Bentley
referring to the 90 and not to the Coupe?  Any suggestions on getting the
radio to receive AM?  By the way, when I bought the car, it had an
aftermarket radio in it.  It didn't receive AM either.
