UFO brake replacement update
My November PIR track experience revealed that my AP Racing four pot
caliper/315mm diameter UFO brake replacement kit developed by KVR really
works! I was able to do a 30 minute hot session and still have brakes
at the end. What a difference it makes to arrive at a corner with a
speed that permits a reasonable line! Scott Mockry rode in one session
with his turbo boost monitoring equipment and danged near pushed a hole
in the passenger side floorboard trying to brace himself for the
seemingly inevitable off track experience, which never came. I believe
he said that he had never experienced a big 'ol sedan slowing down quite
like that! Before the upgrade, the first two laps were like that
followed by laps that had some of the most out of whack, tire destroying
lines ever witnessed at PIR. BTW, the turbo boost read 2.17 bar on
Scott's equipment, while the dash instrument indicated 1.6. Part of
that discrepancy is attributed to the IA stage III ecu mod.
Now, the not so good part: My beautiful cross-drilled rotors did not
look happy at all after the first session and worse after the second. I
had been running the Hawk HPS pads which had performed great on the
street. I cooled it the rest of the day and pulled the pads that
evening. What had happened was that the sloughed off pad material had
collected in the relief between the two pad segments and had become a
gouging tool that severely grooved the rotors. I discussed the issue
with Terry Gosse at KVR. He indicated that the HPS pad was good for a
couple of hot laps only and would not hold up to extended race type
driving. He said that as I was recovering from a broken neck, he
figured I would not be driving that hard and the pads would be great.
Well, enough of that thought! Terry made a very fair adjustment on the
hammered stuff. I now have slotted rotors, which don't look as cool as
the cross-drilled units but according to Terry, should better fit my
style and mix of driving. The current street pads are KVR Sports, which
are carbon fiber-semi metallics. I also have a set of those for Julie's
'90csq. My track day pads will be Hawk Blues which, while being
somewhat aggressive to rotors, shouldn't destroy them in a couple of 30
minute hot sessions. I will update this after the next QC PIR track
event, which will be in February.
