I did some checking, my mechanic, who has beed Audi ceritfied for some 20
years or so, said that the 84 trans had the oil cooler setup on the side of
the trans (sound familiar?) and the 85-88 had the oil cooler at the rear of
the trans. He claims that Audi sells a kit to fit the rear oil cooler style
in an 84. Really, if you buy an 85-up trans used and make sure you get the
cooler, lines, & whatever else you need to mount it, you should be in good
shape.
