Climate Control Air Filtration

I have a '94 90CS Quattro, which I bought used from a dealer last July.
When I took delivery, the salesman described all the car's features,
including the climate control system. He was careful to note that the
system filtered incoming outside air. I am here to report that I don't
think it does. When I'm driving behind a large diesel truck, for example, I
can smell its exhaust but good.

So, is this air filtration system only found on newer Audi's (like the A
series cars) and he was just confusing his model features (meaning I don't
have this cool feature)?  Or, is the air filtration portion of my climate
control system broken or in need of repair or maintenance?

The rest of the CC system works as it should, IMHO.
