thermostat questions

I've heard that it may be helpful to drill an extremely small hole in to
the thermostat to help purge air from the system. Is this good? Oh, I also
noticed that the new thermostat from my old 5ks has the rubber that was
bonded to the holes peeling off. Is this thermostat ruined, or can it
still be used? What was the point of making it with that rubber thing (not
the oring)?
