HELP 87 4kcsq engine noise

my 87 4000csq has been making some weird engine noise lately. I was told that is might be the power steering pump but, when I took the belt off of the ps pump it did not stop, the noise sounds like a harmonica clunking that happens every second when the car is at idle. this is not the tapping that I am used to from the usual lifter noise, so I am thinking that the engine may be out of balance? anyone else had a problem like this? No performance has been lost, that I can tell of, I was able to keep up with 2 other 4000q's on monday! so what could it be?
