If it sounds a lot like a lifter, but maybe louder; and sound like it's coming form the top or mid section of the engine, it may be the brake boost.  The handy backup is driven by a push-rod.  Rod wears, makes slack, starts to "tap".

When mine did it, several (reliable?) folks said I could simply unbolt the unit, take out the rod, and replace the unit.  Did so about 75,000 miles ago.  Haven't noticed a thing since it's departure . . .
