The AC Cobra started out in the 50's as the AC Ace, fitted with a 2 litre
engine that was designed sometime in the 1920's. In 57 AC fitted a Bristol
engine which was based on a BMW design and this pushed the top end to nearly
120mph.
Shelby pumped up the body with massive arches and eventually took the
engines up to 427ci in the MkIII. And he's the guy that we have to blame for
spoiling our fun in the UK. Motorways used to be unrestricted roads (mainly
because most British cars of the time were so slow that 60mph was rarely
seen) but then people found out that AC were testing Le Mans racers on the
M1 at over 170mph and the government promptly sh*t themselves and introduced
the 70mph limit.
Basket-case genuine 289's go for around GBP50K, whilst top-class 427's sell
for over GBP120K (ha! if you can find one for sale!)
