British Rail had recently upgraded the Manchester-London-Birmingham rail link
and were boasting of their short journey times to London. Midland Red, a
normally ultra-conservative bus and coach operator, decided to use the new
unrestricted M1 to compete, and bought three new coaches specifically designed
to cruise safely at up to 110mph.

The speed restrictions came in before the new service could start - the
whole thing was done in rather a rush, and Midland Red received their new
coaches only days before the new limit came in.

They decided, however, that they should at least make one run as 'proof of
concept'. A letter to the Daily Telegraph records one businessman's
frustration at being overtaken in his Jaguar by 'three tailgating buses doing
110mph' as a Midland Red works outing went to London for the day.
