I would even bet _BEER_ on it being the master cylinder.
Easy to be sure - grovel in the driver's footwell and follow the mechanical
linkage from the clutch pedal until you find the rubber boot at the master
cylinder. It should be nice and dry. If, on the other hand, it's soaked in
DOT 4 - the master cylinder has gone. Otherwise, it's the slave. A spring
failure produces slightly odd symptoms that I'm sure he'd have noticed.
