Sounds doubtful to me. You'd have to compress the spring _alot_ to get
those to touch. More likely you got the order of the parts at the top
of the strut incorrect. Its very easy to do. I've done it. (At least,
I'd like to think its easy, since I've done it! :-)

The Eibachs we put on Dad's car were speced for a non Quattro. They fit
fine. They work fine too.
