RE: Split cv boots
I put a split boot on my 4x4 pickup because of the extreme difficulty in
putting a non split on it. This truck is lifted a bit so the cv joint
has a pretty steep angle which stresses the boot more than normal. The
boot has been on 10,000 miles and appears as good as new. I think the
level of success with split boots is a function of how careful you are
in the installation. You have to be extremely careful to keep grease
off of the glued seam. I spent over an hour installing one boot. I
would never claim a split boot is as good as an original but they will
get you by for a reasonable amount of time if you are short on time or
funds. For my truck I am willing to change the split boots at a rate of
4 splits to 1 original before going back to original.
