... if it is a car you can open the hood on, that's probably the easiest
way.  The engine code is usually stamped on a flat spot on the left side
(driver's side) of the engine near the head.  You'll likely see a 2
character code followed by a 6 digit serial number ...

Another possibility is to look at the build sticker in the trunk.  This
will list all of the configuration information, color codes, option
codes, etc.  Most of the codes can be decoded from information in the
parts fiche ...
