Also, after connecting the MM across the wire I guess it would be a
good idea to tug or wiggle the wires to make sure it isn't an
intermittent fault caused by vibrations on the wires.

The odd thing here is that this thing happens at exactly the same
speed (115km/h) and exactly the same RPM (3000 - 3100). Occassionally
it will show its head when getting of the line moderately.

I will get hold of a MM as soon as I can. Time to visit my
electrical engineering friends. :)
