One other thing to check is whether the starter power cable is grounding
to the chasis intermittently through a worn spot in the insulation. I
had this happen on a 1984 4k. Took months to figure out what was going
on, but symptoms were similar.  Ran a new wire and no probs since. This
could be really bad if the wire gets a good solid short going. I could
imagine fire and all sorts of nasty stuff.
