Might be the alternator, we had a similar incident.  Turned out that one of
the brushes had worn very quickly and was making only marginal contact.

I'd recommend taking a charged battery to replace it, then get the other one
to a charger.  After recharge, check the battery.  Also watch the ammeter with
the new battery.  I think I remember reading somewhere that there are some
electronic things that can get trashed if you run the car with the battery
disconnected.  It's a reference point for ground, or something like that.
Don't remember exactly what, but I do remember that it's supposed to be a bad
idea.
