I just got an A41.8TM Quattro and looked into this a lot. The sole reason
I've heard NOT to use Mobil 1 is that it can cause oil leaks. The reason
for this is that gaskets will absorb conventional oil and expand. They
will not absorb Mobil 1(maybe other synthetics also).

Audi DOES NOT recommend changing the oil on 1.8Ts for 5000 miles and 7500
for 2.8s. The alleged reason for this is the factory fill oil is different
and promotes breakin. I think Audi goes so far as to say that they won't
warrantee oil leaks if this hasn't been followed. After this you are free
to use Mobil 1.
As far as purging the factory fill oil, don't worry about it. Just drain
the old, put in the new and drive. The small amount of old oil that's left
is compatible with Mobil 1 and will mix fine. I suppose it will
contaminate(not really the right word) the new oil to some small amount,
but it doesn't matter.

I used to use Mobil 1 5W-30 in my Nissan SE-R year 'round and I live near
Boston. I never had a problem since Mobil 1 doesn't change viscosity with
temperture.
Good luck
