Re: mobil 1
Synthetic oils do not cause oil leaks.
The problem is, conventional oils leave deposits around seals, causing them to
run dry over time. Then, when you take an engine that has been running on
conventional oil for a long time and switch to synthetic, the synthetic oil
will dissolve old these old deposits. exposing these seal to oil again. The
problem is, since the where running dry, they no longer seal and you develop
leaks.
For really good info on oil and changing over to synthetic oil, check out the
engine oil bible site at:
http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/2195/engineoil_bible.html
I believe that the real benefit of synthetic oil is in reducing engine wear
during cold start-up, especially in cold climates.
BTW, I have been running my 1989 90Q since 1990 with synthetic oil in engine,
transaxle and rear diff and have never had an oil related problem.

| I just got an A41.8TM Quattro and looked into this a lot. The sole reason
| I've heard NOT to use Mobil 1 is that it can cause oil leaks. The reason
| for this is that gaskets will absorb conventional oil and expand. They
| will not absorb Mobil 1(maybe other synthetics also).
