pearl-white paint

I know that I fell in love with the pearl-white paint when I first saw it
on a V8Q some years back.  With the discussion on paint, I was wondering
if it Audi was the first to come up with this pearlescent (sp?) stuff for
cars?

Another reason I ask is that I saw an ugly-as-butt RX7 with an obviously
Earl Scheib-y paint job done in pearl-white (or something vaguely
resembling that...)
