Re: about switching to synthetic
Same thing I did. I got the synthetic 5W40 stuff and had it dumped
in. On the day I got it back from the garage (they did the change
when fixing turbo line oil leaks) I drove down to the shop and coming
to a stop street I noticed the oil pressure go way down to 1 bar at
idle. Just before that I heard a mild clunk from up front. Ever since
then I've been running the oil and pressure drops way down to 0.8 bar
at times and when cold and when pushing the motor on the highway the
pressure hardly sees more than 4 bar. I have since not had a chance
(or the money) to put in new normal dino oil or to check to see if the
oil pump had been damaged. It could also be the low weight of oil (5W40)
is causing these low readings. Or it could be that the "shock treatment"
loosened up some big blop of gunk and has wedged itself into that sieve
in the sump (but this would have been apparent when the big-enders were
changed, but no sign of gunk). Or it could also be that the detergent
oil has done something funny to the oil pressure sensor (how does that
thing work anyway?). In fact, oil temp is pretty low most of the time
as well.
Well, nuff sed. The synth cleans well, but sometimes I think the
cleaning can be a bit harsh as I might be facing a replacement of a oil
pump or just the oil pressure and temp sensors right now.
