How are you going to do that with the spring's force holding 
everything in?  Can't lower the strut low enough to allow the spring 
to clear without removing it.
Than how are you going to loosen the shock insert's nut/cap with 
the spring in the way?  With the fender in the way it is a lot easier 
to just undo exactly nine more bolts (four for wheel, two for 
caliper, one for each driveshaft, tie rod, ball joint).

The procedure you mentioned is possible with the 5000 cars becouse 
the strut bearing is removable from the other side (top) of the stut tower.
