Re: 1997 A4t Throttle Response

I am the proud owner for about 4 weeks now of a 1997 A4t with about 12k
miles. It is a 5speed automatic, and I have noticed several instances
where I am staring from a dead or near dead stop and giving the car
substantial throttle (1/2 to 2/3) and the car refuses to move almost
completely. It was so dramatic that cars behind me would actually honk
because they thought I was being an ass.

Early A4T owners reported such hesitation problem being rectified by
replacing the ECU with the '98.5 unit with the upgraded software.
Dealers do it under the warranty.
One other potential problem: a broken Wastegate actuator rod. The car
loses turbo boost completely and remains to be motivated only by the
tiny 4-cyl 1.8L low compression engine. You might want to check the
archives in http://www.a4.org. Hardly a week passes by without someone
screaming: "Look Ma, no boost!"
Seems to be pretty common on '97 A4T and on some early '98 A4T. Methinks
a recall is coming.
