My 80 4000's radiator fan is also directly wired to the battery. It will
come on any time the thermoswitch activates. This is a single-speed fan
and no relays of any sort. The only related relay in the radiator fan
circuit is for the A/C... the fan also comes on when A/C is turned on.
My 84 5000S Turbo, however, has its radiator fan thermoswitch wired
through the ignition switch, and has the fancy 3-speed control via relays.
Thus, the fan will stop when ignition is shut off. The injector cooling
blower, on the other hand, *will* run if the underhood temperature is
high enough after shutoff.
My A4 2.8q has both a mechanical, engine-driven fan and an electric
fan. So far I have not observed the electric fan coming on except
when the A/C is on.
