I don't think that's the problem. If you can push the steering wheel in and
when you let go, it springs back out, look instead at the adjustment of the
steering shaft coupler to the input shaft on the rack.
The way these things are adjusted is as follows: Loosen clamp bolt at
bottom of coupler (done standing on your head, approximately), have helper
press steering wheel inward to bottom, then back off so there's 1/4 to 1/8
inch play, while helper holds steering wheel in that position, tap coupler
downward to fully seat it on splines of steering rack input shaft stub,
tighten bolt. Extricate bodies. You may find yourself getting cozier than
you think with your helper - this is a very confused procedure!
Make sure the tang on the steering wheel which turns off the directionals
is not pressing directly on the trip lever for them - if you are not
careful you'll break the switch. Just have helper turn the steering wheel
R-L-R a few times to make sure it's clear as your helper depresses it.
Alternate method (no helper available) involves 2 by 4s, padding wheel,
motorcycle tie-downs to hold all in tension while adjusting coupler.
(Desperation method!)
I think what happened here is that someone had the rack out and didn't make
this adjustment on reassembly.
Digital dash notes: (Potential Audi content!!!!)
Wife-the-lawyer has an interesting case involving a digital dash on a Furd
or something. Private seller (shade tree mechanic) changed dash because
turn signal indicator didn't work, tried to get Furd dealer to set
replacement junkyard odometer to correct miles, they told him they'd have
to send it off and it would take two weeks (translation, you didn't buy a
new one from us, f*ck off, buddy!).
Seller replaced dash, advised buyer that mileage wasn't original, buyer
drove away.
Some days later, buyer contracted case of buyer's remorse, and became
unhappy with the car. During the course of this unhappiness, buyer
contacted Florida DMV and complained about mileage change - State then
charged seller with a FELONY - altering mileage on a motor vehicle, intent
to defraud, etc., etc., etc. (Turns out mileage on replacement odometer was
HIGHER than original!!! Doesn't matter, it was ALTERED!!!)
Seller claims buyer was advised of non-original miles, buyer claims not to
have been. Seller is in DEEP hot water, and getting hotter.
Moral: PUT IT IN WRITING!!! GET IT SIGNED!!! This is pertinent to Audi
because we frequently have odometer problems and wind up changing them!!!
Stay tuned . . .
