It runs fine except for in slow traffic of on long trips the temperature guage will move from the normal temperature to the very top, or somewhere in between. During this the car does not appear to overheat, but the air coming out of the cool air center vent, or any other vents with the setting on cool, is warm to HOT!!!! So has anyone else had a problem like this? Is it the radiator? I have replaced the timing belt/waterpump and the thermostat

Rae:
I purchased my '86 4kcsq about a year and a half ago with the same
problem, plus a slow leak around the top of the radiator which had
already been serviced (rodded) once. I did the nuclear war approach and
replaced the radiator, all hoses, lower-temperature thermostat (from GPR
Parts; the old one came out in pieces), and orange/gold Mercedes-Benz
coolant (the local Audi independent dealer recommended and sold it, at
about $12 per gallon, versus the Audi coolant at about $20 per gallon).
That cooled things off significantly. When I do the timing belt I will
also do the water pump and complete the package. Now (with old water
pump still attached), the needle operates about mid-level and only
climbs significantly higher in stop & go traffic, but never as high as
it once did. Hope this helps.
