A4- Heavy steering at low engine revs.

Hi,

I have a 97 A4 1.8TQ and I have been experiencing heavy steering effort
required when the engine revs are down around 1000 or less. I park in a
multi tiered car park and when driving around at idle in second the
steering wheel appears to have no power assist and I need to shift down to
1st to get the revs up and then its more manoeuvrable.

Has any one else experienced this or should I take it to the dealer for a
check up.

I have 17"x8" rims with 235/40/17 tyres but this appeared to be ok when
new.
