83 Ur-Q Head Broke, replacement?
>My 83 Ur-Q has got a broken head. Unrepairable.
>Suggestions for replacments?
You can buy a factory rebuilt head from the UK for around GBP525 plus GBP175
for the core and approx. GBP100 for the shipping ... figure about $1,300
complete. These come complete with a european cam as well ... I've checked
with Dialynx and they say they need about a week's notice to get one; they
also accept credit-cards, which makes it easier to deal with them than with
Kim Collins, who also sells rebuilt heads, but doesn't. I have thought
about buying a replacement for the badly cracked one on my '85 in order to
keep its originality (btw, the head on it also has an '83 date code but I
can't find any evidence either from Audi or the service records that came
with the car that it's ever been replaced) but I have also purchased a 2.5L
motor out of a late-model Eurovan in the expectation of building a killer
motor instead ... however, the more I think about it, the more I think this
will ultimately find a home in my 200q. It will never become a
"collectible" (the jury's still out on the Ur-Q) and I'm more likely to
enjoy flogging it since I can always find a replacement for it if/when I
ever screw up and roll it into a ball at a track event (it has a Torsen, you
know).
>Can a head from 87 5KCSTQ be fitted?
Of course ... it'll just take some work. Probably easier to swap the whole
motor instead.
>I have been told that there is port size and cooling passage
>differences.
Yes, there IS some welding/machining involved but it CAN be done.
>What is the difference between an MB and a MC motor?
They're basically similar but strictly speaking, the compression ratio, cam
timing, FI calibration, et al. are all different.
