Oh boy did I go there! My 87 5ks parts car was the same way. I
pried/jimmied/cussed the plate up until I could remove the dist. for a
buyer. Seemed weird. BTW, nothing else broke while I fought with it.
I would say grind off the rivet on a running car.
BUT, don't the later cars have computer controlled timing anyway??? You
won't achieve anything by turning the distributor so why bother tearing
that plate off? Maybe that's why it's there...
