Outbraking radar
I've got a technique that seems to be successful in evading "instant-on"
radar, but only when one meets the patrol car head-on. Here's how it's
done:
1) Let the cruise control handle the throttle.
2) Maintain continuous awareness of any following
traffic that might be affected by your braking.
3) Poise right foot (or left, if you prefer) over
the brake pedal whenever a suspicious looking car
approaches. Ditto *any* group of cars, because it
may contain a lurking patrol car. Ditto *any* big-rig,
for the same reason.
3) At the first hint of a "peep" from the detector, brake
immediately and heavily. DON'T DO IT IF YOU
AREN'T ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN OF THE
POSITION OF FOLLOWING TRAFFIC!
I hypothesize that it takes something like a second, or at least a goodly
portion of same, for the radar gun to register your speed, thus braking
quickly enough and hard enough enables one to beat the rap. OTOH, maybe my
speed wasn't high enough to bother the REOs I encountered, or maybe they
had a hot date with a donut. OTOOH, this earned me about 20 miles of
slooow (55 mph) driving when one of Arizona's finest hung a "U" and
followed me.
This is way too much of PITA to do in anything but sparse traffic, BTW, and
potentially hazardous, especially if you've got a tailgater. Additionally,
it does nothing to prevent your being shot in the back, but this almost
never happens, in my experience; this may not hold true in other locales
(I'm in California). It also may not help when you can't see traffic a
mile or so ahead. In any event, as a couple of other listers have
observed, a detector is no substitute for continuous vigilance.
