Re: 88 90 radio codes
Not to burst your buble, but the 88 and 89 Audi radio's were soft coded. That
means that the car was delivered with a factory code but the code could be
changed. That factrory code was 1111. If that code was never changed (since it
was a soft code), it will still be the code. The idea was so the customer
could put in his/her own code. That proved difficult since if the car was sold
without the changed code available, the next owner would be SOL. So, in 1990
Audi went to hard codes that could not be changed and were stored in the Audi
database and available from your dealer.
Might as well try the 1111 if there is no evidence anywhere of a code in the
paperwork with the car. Sometimes the code was marked by a dealer on the
radio chassis, but not likely.
In the event that you don't know the procedure to instaal a code here it is.
1; press Trep and Tscan simutaneously and hold for 3 sec
2; release and 1000 will replace SAFe in the display
3; using the first 4 station buttons, enter the code. ie button 1 for the
first #, button 2 for the next and so on
4; when all four code numbers are entered, press Trep And Tscan again for 3
sec and release. there will pause and if the code is correct the radio will
begin to play 87.5. If the code is not right, the radio will display SAF2. You
have 3 tries, after which if you leave the radio disconnected for an hour,
you'll get 3 more. After that your done. The radio will display SAF6 and all
that can be done is to send the radio in to be decoded. Audi has an exchange
program and for $115.00US you can order a replacement that's guarnteed for a
year. The Audi part # is 893 035 180 A and may be hard coded. This is the
worst case.
Good luck
