5k Sunroof question...

My car's sunroof needs more than just the usual "clean and lube" the rails.
What is happening is at the end of travel in the fully open position one of
the two cables "strips" past the gear resulting in the two cables no longer
lining up with the alignment marks. I have checked the limit switches and they
seem fine. My temporary solution is to reset the mechanical "timing" of the
cables once in a while. This is getting old so after reviewing the Bentley I
have decided it is "rebuild time" and am seeking BTDT advice. The job looks
doable enough. My car's build date is 4/87 so I believe I have the "later
style" sunroof mechanism per Bentley.

Questions are:

1) What is most prone to wear, the motor/gearbox output gear or the cables?
(In other words do I replace just cables or both cables and motor/gearbox
assy.?)

2) How bad is this job really?

3) Is there a "repair kit" of parts or do I just call Linda and ask for the
cables?

TIA on any and all collective wisdom the list can provide on this. (Yes, it is
finaly "sunroof season" here in CA! Yay...sailing season too!)
