INOPERABLE ODOMETER

1986 4kcsq; odometer stopped working day before yesterday at 164799-1/2;
today noticed "clicks" behind instrument panel; click frequency
increases with speed; odometer numbers "jump" at same time as clicks;
believe I am getting input to the back of the odometer.
	Have Bently; reference?
	Is this correctable with the tightening of nut or screw, or is it
likely distorted/worn plastic w/o rememdy?
	Is it difficult to remove instrument panel to get to the problem?
	Of what do I have to be careful when I pull the panel to get to the
odometer?
	Will steering wheel removal facilitate operation?
