Gates belts and some more belt info, RE: 2.8V6 timing belt

You sound really sold on "Gates", here is a little story for you:
Gates used to be (maybe still is) the main OEM supplier of AC belts for an
Auto manufacture (which I have very close ties to), after a lot of trouble
with replacements of the idlers, we found out that the Gates belt was
stretching too much, up to the limit of the adjustment and was causing noisy
idlers, nothing was wrong with the idlers (most of the time) but the "slack"
belt was causing technicians to replace the idler (much more costly than a
belt). The cure was to change supplier which produced a belt that did not
stretch so much......
Now imagine what will happen if this phenomena will happen to your timing
belt.............I' leave the gory details to your imagination....
Of course, just because it happened in one case does not mean that it has
any reflection on other products (since they are made to different
specifications anyway).
