You were right on the money. The picture shows exactly the part that I
broke. I contacted the local Audi parts departments and they tell me it's a
"check valve" and that it's part of the air conditioning system. Nobody
could tell me what it actually does. It's a $28 part AND there's only 2 of
them in the US (if they haven't been sold already)!
Put one on order, blocked off the filter and the tube where the break is and
drove to one of the local dealers with no apparent ill effect. Stay tuned
for more on the resolution.
