Sulfur odor, digest # 2387
A sulfur / rotten egg smell from the exhaust is caused by either rotten
eggs or a rich condition. My 90 90 Q is way fat in the overrun, and
briefly has this problem, no biggie, but if the odor is there much more
than briefly, you have a problem. Have the seller check the CO before
the converter, there is a port to do this. If it`s too rich, make them
fix it NOW. You could be in for a big surprise if you let it go. One of
the biggest causes of premature converter failure is a rich running
condition, and a crumbling converter can plug the exhaust and then
you`re really stuck. It`s really important to deal with this post haste,
and don`t let them slide out of it. A converter failure caused by a rich
condition MAY not be covered by the federally mandated emissions
warranty. (5/50, 7/70, whatever it is for that car). John.
