A good idea. A couple of years ago, I purchased a modified intake housing
for my (then) 80, into which mounts a replaceable pollen filter element.
Unfortunately, it seems that the intake housing itself is no longer
available here, but the filter elements are. I've just transferred the
housing to my 'new' 90q, and replaced the filter element. The old element
was totally black on one side, pure white on the other. It works! No stuff
in my vents, less dirt on the inside of my windscreen, even less diesel
soot in my lungs. According to the box, it keeps out 90% of all the pollen
and road dust. Even particles as small as 0.01 um (soot, tobacco smoke) are
filtered out by more than 50%. It reduces air flow by 7.5% when new.

The housing fits the 80/80q (9/86-), the 90/90q (2/87-) and the coupe (12/88-).
Part number for a housing is 893 091 401, and it includes a filter element.
Elements are to be replaced every 10k miles/12 months, part number 893 091 700.

Easy to fit (took me 15 minutes second time around, which includes cleaning
the intake area) and even easier to recharge.
