83 GT air box -- any improvements/upgrades?

At lunch last Friday with my friend Daren, previous owner of my '83 GT,
we were talking about what he'd done recently and what he thought might
come up next.  In addition to new front strut inserts, I also have new
wheel bearings, CV joints, timing belt, water pump and a few other minor
pieces of hardware replaced in the last year or two.  All good news.

As for what to expect next, the fellow whose shop Daren used was
suggesting that the air box/fuel distributor was worn and could stand
replacement some time soon.  So naturally, being the kind of guy I am, I
started wondering: 

If I have to replace this item anyway, might there be some easily fitted
unit that would provide improved performance?  More air, more fuel,
better metering curve, etc?  

Thanks for any advice/assistance/warnings you may have.
