Yeap, they're called washes out in the southwest and they're very dangerous.
We traveled very cautiously anywhere in low areas or where posted "Do not
enter when flooded".
 It is sound advice for anyone going Jeff's way to listen to those warnings.
On our way to Grand Canyon from Purgatory we spent a good part of our time
listening to the flash flood reports on the radio.
