Ur-q bumpers

Hey:

This has probably been beaten to death already, but I've never been very successful with 
the search engine. 

Anyway, is there a fairly straightforward means to "bring in" the bumpers on an '85 
U.S.-spec ur-q? It looks to me that something could be shortened internally or modified 
such that the bumpers themselves will sit closer to the body, perhaps 3-4 inches closer, 
eliminating that unsightly looking accordian section on both bumpers. Anyone?
