Well the GTI engine will fit the 4000 (make sure you're getting an 8-valve
unit), but you have to transplant some stuff from your old engine due to
the arrangement differences. You'll of course need your old transaxle,
clutch and flywheel, but you'll need the following from your old engine:
intake and exhaust manifolds, cam cover, timing belt covers, mount brackets,
coolant flanges, oil filter flange, oil pump and pick up, oil pan,
all engine sensors.

I recall that your car is an 84 4000? That means you have a 8.5:1
compression stock engine. Most 85 and later GTI engines have 10:1 compression
and a knock sensing digital ignition system. If you use your original
distributor and ignition you'll probably get engine knock. Hence, you
should also transplant the distributor, ignition ECU and associated
wiring too. This part is trickier and not a direct bolt-on, but can
be done. The 85-87 Audi 4000 1.8 cars have the same knock sensing ignition
system, and has more appropriate wiring harness (with the correct lengths
of wires, etc) for use as basis.
